
Yuhua SMC
Etymology:
Yuhua SMC is a Single Member Constituency located in the western area of Yuhua. This ward has been carved out during the 2011 General Election and was part of Jurong GRC.
Establishment:
Yuhua SMC was established in 1984, it was then abolished and absorbed into the now-defunct Bukit Timah GRC in 1997 and saw its re-appearance in 2001. The Yuhua division is a part of the Jurong GRC, but was specially crafted out as a Single Member Constituency for the 2011 general election.
MPs:
One characteristic of this constituency since 1988 is that it always oversees the fight between woman MP candidates. The SMC was led by Yu-Foo Yee Shoon from 1984-1997 and the current MP from the 2011 General Elections is Ms Grace Fu. Ms Grace Fu started her career as an Auditor in the Overseas Union Bank and worked in corporate planning, financial control and business development positions in the Haw Par Group. She also worked with the PSA group was responsible for the business performance of PSA’s terminals in Singapore, Thailand, Brunei and Japan. She enjoys outdoor activities like rafting, swimming and hiking.
Political Aspect:
Yuhua SMC is managed by the Jurong Town Council, because Yuhua is also within close proximity to the town center of Jurong East, most of its history is as described within the section of Jurong GRC.
Bukit Panjang SMC
Etymology: Bukit in the Malay Language means "hill" and Panjang means "long". Bukit Panjang literally means "long hill" which gets its name from the long range of high hills which ends in Bukit Timah to the south.
Administration: The Bukit Panjang area comes under the administrative lead of the Holland-Bukit Timah Town Council, which oversees the management and maintenance of the many apartments (HDB Flats) and commercial units in Bukit Panjang.
Political history: Bukit Panjang is politically divided into three constituencies. The central area of Bukit Panjang is in Bukit Panjang Single Member Constituency whose Member of Parliament is Teo Ho Pin who is the mayor for Northwest Community Development Council. The other two constituencies are enclosed in the Holland-Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency. This includes Senja, a part of Jelapang, Segar, Gangsa and a portion of Petir. Senja, Segar and Jelapang are located in Zhenghua constituency of Holland-Bukit Timah GRC whose Member of Parliament is Liang Eng Hwa with Gangsa and the remaining portion of Petir belonging to Cashew division of Holland-Bukit Timah GRC with its Member of Parliament being the Community Development, Youth and Sports minister Dr.Vivian Balakrishnan.
History: Bukit Panjang, which is known as Zhenghua for several years before its name was reinstated, is a suburban town in western Singapore. Development of the town and advanced earthworks begun on 15 June 1981. HDB flats rose up by 20 May 1985, but only Blocks 1xx and 2xx were built so far. Neighbourhood 4 was up and running by 1989, and followed by Neighbourhood 5 and 6 which was the recent ones since 1995.
